“A proposal to reduce the speed limit from 70mph to 60mph at the Moneymore-Cookstown dual carriageway is currently being processed,” a spokesman told the Mail.

“This proposal and a number of other speed limit alterations across NI have been objected to and TransportNI legislation Branch are currently dealing with the objections.

“It is therefore not possible to confirm when the speed limit will be reduced.”

The proposal had been put forward due to the accident history on the particularly busy stretch of road.

The plan was outlined in July 2014 at a monthly meeting of the old Cookstown District Council.
