October is PSNI’s tyre and lights safety month

The PSNI’s current road safety campaign is focused on tyre safety and ensuring that vehicle lights are working

This means that police will be increasing vehicle checks, looking at things like tyre tread depth and break lights.

1.6mm is the legal tread depth limit on car tyres and 1mm for motorbikes.

Tyre pressure is also critical and should be at the manufacturer’s specification.

Free tyre safety checks are available from almost all tyre suppliers across NI. The following website provides further information www.tyresafe.org/campaigns/tyre-safety-month-2013/2013-campaign/introduction

There have been nine road deaths in the H District policing area (Larne, Ballymoney, Moyle, Coleraine, Ballymena) since April 2013. The message from police is that one road death is too many, so drivers should do all they can to increase safety.
