O'Dowd stepping down from Council

SINN Fein's John O'Dowd is to step down from Craigavon Council, after 13 years as a councillor

Mr O'Dowd, who also serves as an MLA for Upper Bann is taking the opportunity to end his dual mandate of Council and Assembly member under new legislation which allows for his seat to be filled without recourse to a by-election.

Under the new legislation political parties can fill a seat previously held by a member of that party through nomination by the party’s appointed nominating officer and without recourse to a costly by-election.

This brings the process for filling vacancies on council into line with the process for filling vacancies in the Assembly.

Mr O’Dowd said: "The internal party process is time-bound but I have asked that it be implemented with due haste and my replacement should be in place following the summer recess.”

He said: “The role of an MLA has become increasingly more time demanding and it is impossible to serve both roles properly. Therefore I believe it is only right and proper that I take the opportunity offered by this legislation to end my dual mandate.”

Mr O’Dowd added: “I have really enjoyed being a Sinn Fein representative on Craigavon Council, though my time there covered some of the darkest days of the conflict.

"As an elected representative in the Assembly I will continue to work with both my Sinn Fein colleagues and officials on Council in giving representation to the people of Craigavon."

He thanked all the council officers and staff for their help throughout his time as a Councillor and wished them all the best for the future.
