Mr O’Dowd said, “I want to thank everyone who voted for Sinn Féin and who supported Nuala Toman and I in this campaign.

“This was most certainly a historic election.

“All over the north, the electorate responded positively to Sinn Féin’s message of equality, integrity and respect and returned us with a strengthened mandate and stronger republican representation in the Assembly.

“Throughout the campaign we said that what Sinn Fein wins in this election - is a win for all, and we intend to deliver on that.

“We will use our increased mandate to deliver for everyone in our society to ensure we have equality, integrity and respect at the core of the political process.

“We will continue to oppose Tory austerity and campaign for designated special status for the north in the EU.

“Sinn Féin will enter negotiations on those principles.”
