Oil theft incidents prompt police to issue new warning

POLICE in Ballymena are offering residents advice on how to protect themselves against oil thefts following several recent incidents in the town.

Simple steps that can be taken by members of the public will assist police in tackling this crime. Chief Inspector John Magill commented on the selfishness of oil thieves and outlines how the public can assist police.

Police are committed to tackling heating oil thefts and bringing the selfish people who commit it to task. These thefts hit the most vulnerable in our community the hardest; the elderly people who need heat and warmth to stay well and families who often struggle to meet rising fuel costs.

“We are asking anyone who notices any type of suspicious activity in their local area to contact us. On many occasions, vehicles will be used to transport oil and if you notice a vehicle which looks out of place or not quite right, please contact us immediately. We would rather investigate something which may appear to be insignificant than miss the opportunity to catch a criminal in the act.”

“Most thieves are opportunists and will take the easy option and while the advice below may not fully deter a determined thief, it will make them think again about entering your property”.

Lock your gates: The simple act of keeping your garden or drive gates closed and securely locked can prevent a theft. Ensure that all gates and fences are in good repair.

Create obstacles: Plant pots and general garden paraphernalia can be placed in the path of any potential intruders. They will make noise and waste time moving the items or navigating around them. Remove and secure any tools or ladders which could be used as an aide to commit crime.

Limit the quantity of fuel in your tank: Full tanks are a more popular target, so consider limiting the amount of oil that you have in your tank at any one time.

Lock your tank: Use a good quality, alarmed padlock or install lockable caps with crop proof fittings. Where possible fit hardened flexible casings, to any vulnerable fuel hoses, so that they are harder to cut.

Consider installing security lighting and CCTV: Lights do not only warn you of an intruder but also alert neighbours and passing police patrols. Further crime prevention advice is available from your local Crime Prevention officer by calling 0845 600 8000.
