Old Ahoghill village pump restored

THE old cow-tail pump which stood on the Ballymena Road in Ahoghill has been restored and returned to its original position just outside the Orange Hall, to the delight of many villagers.

Having been in the safekeeping of the McDowell family for several years it was donated by the family in memory of their father Bertie and Mother Jean.

The pump was restored by the Ahoghill Traders’ Association and a new feature was created close to the original siting of the pump.

It was originally used by residents living on the top half of the Road, while one lower down served residents of the bottom half. Two bucketfuls, more easily transported than one, apparently, constituted a ‘go of water’.

Later the pumps were removed and replaced by two ‘fountains’ connected to the mains.

The formal handover of the pump took place last Saturday with several members of the McDowell family in attendance. The Traders’ Association expressed their appreciation to the family for their kind gesture and for ensuring that a little piece of Ahoghill’s history had been restored.
