Old aircraft donatedto Aviation Society

AN old aeroplane was recently retrieved from a barn near Moira.

A group of members of the Ulster Aviation Society moved the Fairchild Argus aircraft, which was donated to the UAS.

It was transported by trailer, in several loads, to the UAS collection in two Second World War hangars located adjacent to the Long Kesh (HMP Maze) site.

The UAS will be restoring the aircraft, which requires extensive repairs. Eighteen aircraft are now in the society’s collection, the largest of its kind on the island of Ireland.

The Argus itself is an American design from the mid-1930s. Hundreds of them served during the war in the Royal Air Force, Air Transport Auxiliary and the United States Army Air Corps in various roles, including light transport, utility aircraft, trainer and even U-boat spotting.
