Old news is good news for Alwyn!

IT is frequently said that newspapers are filled with a load of old rubbish these days, but for one resident on Kildoag Road there was some interesting old news among a load of old rubbish he was clearing out.

Up to his oxters in a 'reddin' out session' at his home at 57 Kildoag Road on Thursday of last week, Alwyn Evans happened upon a very old copy of The Londonderry Sentinel, dating back to Saturday, February 2, 1895.

Surprised and amused Alwyn, who is 64, rang The Sentinel to share his surprise.

Back in the good old days the paper cost one old Penny and was just four pages in size - although the pages measured 26 inches deep by 25 inches wide. It was a daily paper in those days.

Asked where he came by the ancient newspaper, Alwyn said: "I just found it when I was reddin' up. There is a filing cabinet at the house and I was just reddin' stuff out to burn and I just came across it."

Promising not to set fire to the old edition, he said he did not know what to do with it, but would consult with his wife when she came home.

"It's a big thing so it is, and the front is covered in advertisements. It's got everything in it," he said, adding: "I just don't know what I'm going to do with it. It came as a surprise to me to find it."

"My mother and father are dead and so is the wife's, and I think it came from one of the houses when we were reddin' them out, but I don't know which one. I'll have to consult with the wife and see if she knows. I haven't decided whether to keep it, but I'll ask the boss and see what she thinks," he said.
