Older people get advice on staying warm this winter

LISBURN City Council has teamed up with Age NI to promote its ‘Spread the Warmth’ campaign.

The Council has produced copies of the ‘Winter Wrapped Up’ booklet which will be distributed at Council facilities, and offer older residents advice on how to be prepared to cope with winter.

The Mayor, Councillor Brian Heading, said: “Winter is not typically everyone’s favourite season and the cold weather can be a worry for our older residents. The Winter Wrapped Up booklet which was printed by the Council, in partnership with Age NI, details how it is possible to stay healthy, safe and as comfortable as possible this winter.

“By following simple preparation advice Lisburn’s older residents will be able to get themselves and their homes ready for winter. It also contains information on where older residents can access further advice and support.”

The five important things older residents must do to stay warm and well this winter are: heat the home well; get financial support; eat well; get the flu jab; and look after themselves and others.

Deputy Mayor Alderman William Leathem said: “By getting ready for the cold weather it is likely that our older residents will keep warm and well this winter. The Winter Wrapped Up booklet details how residents can help to ward off the winter chills through simple measures such as having their heating system and electric blanket serviced; checking with Power NI to see if they qualify for free insulation; ensuring they have warm, non-slip footwear; keeping basic food items in the cupboards and freezer; and making sure they claim all the financial support they are entitled to.”

It is also important to remember that several thin layers of clothing will keep you warmer than one thick layer, as the layers trap warm air; and be sure to keep simple cold and flu remedies in the house.

Ms Anne O’Reilly, Chief Executive of Age NI added: “We are delighted that Lisburn City Council is supporting the Spread the Warmth campaign. 70% of older people in Northern Ireland worry most about staying warm in winter - that’s why we welcome the cCouncil’s help this year. It’s easy to get involved - pick up a copy of Winter Wrapped Up for someone you know; do something kind for an older person to help them during the winter months; or simply make a donation to help Age NI reach more older people in need this year.”

Residents can collect a copy of the booklet at the following Council facilities: Lagan Valley Island, the Island Arts Centre, Lagan Valley LeisurePlex and the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum.

Mr Heading concluded: “The Council understands that it is not unusual to feel a bit down in the winter so it would encourage its older residents to try and keep to their usual routines; and if they can’t visit friends be sure to phone them to chat. It would also encourage its residents to look out for the older members of their community and provide assistance where possible.”
