Olympian McIlroy storms to victory in Blackpool 10k

Larne AC weekly report: Former Olympian James McIlroy won the Blackpool Hilton Illuminations 10k on Saturday (August 30), crossing the line in 32:58 which shows his training for Berlin Marathon is well on track.

Meanwhile, Larne AC’s Amy Beggs completed the David O’Brien Challenge as part of her training for the 26 Extreme Causeway Coast Ultra. She clocked 2:04 and will be pleased as she has just returned from injury and her training is paying off.

Three club members took part in Saturday’s Born2Run Dambusters 10K at Silent Valley, with 229 runners taking part. At the starting line everyone was given a blast of that good old Bruce Springsteen number ‘Born to Run’ to set the tone. John Neill had a fantastic run, finishing third in a time of 39:01, followed by Bert Shaw in 15th (43:27). Margaret Ferguson crossed the line in 218th place in (75.51).

Elsewhere, Michael McCambridge competed in Castlewellan Triathlon. He finished 30th in a field of 227 in a great time of 1:17.

Four Larne runners competed at the Northern Ireland Masters Athletics event.

Rhonda Montgomery ran strongly in the 100m in a time of 15.69 seconds and this result saw her claim gold in the FV45 category. What made the win more impressive was the fact that she was nursing a hamstring injury.

Geraldine Quigley recorded a new 800m personal best in 02:39 seconds, finishing fourth in her category of FV35. In the 1,500m Quigley crossed the line in 05: 28.32, finishing fourth in her category.

Bernard Brady made his track debut in the men’s 5,000m, crossing the line in 17:53to win gold in his category.

Rhonda Brady also claimed gold in her 400m category (FV40) recording a 01:07.85 time. In the 200m Brady won bronze thanks to a personal best time of 30.50.

On Sunday seven Larne members took part in the Ballymoney Summer Triathlon. The race was a great starting point for many members, especially juniors Jack Baxter (1st) and Scott Kane (3rd).

Results as follows: Ryan Stewart (4th), Martan Keane (8th), Jack Baxter (10th), Stewart Baxter (12th), Ian McCluggage (25th), Glyn Allen (26th), and Scott Kane (33rd).

Stephen Montgomery raced in Sunday’s Newry Triathlon and finished strongly 48th in 1:09.
