Olympic Flame streets confirmed

The Olympic Torch will be carried by inspirational people through the streets and roads of the Moyle District on Sunday June 3rd.

Glenariff, Cushendall, Ballycastle and Bushmills will host the Olympic Torch and its Torch Bearers with events and festivities so that the streets can be lined in order to create a festive atmosphere for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Each of the four host towns and villages are extending an invite to surrounding communities to come and welcome the Olympic Flame.

Each location will run events in celebration of the Torch Relay passing through. Event details will be publicised in due course. There will be activities for all ages and an opportunity for everyone to join in the festivities.

At the designated time however everyone will be asked to line the streets to welcome the Torch Bearers carrying the Olympic Flame on its epic journey to the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Torch and its cavalcade will be a spectacle that this area has never before experienced.

Some 7,600 inspirational Torch Bearers have been confirmed and they now know the community they will carry the Flame in to celebrate their personal achievement and contribution to the local community.

The streets along the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, which can be viewed in full at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay, gives street-by-street details and proposed start times for when the Olympic Flame will travel through Glenariff, Cushendall, Ballycastle and Bushmills.

Residents living in and around Glenariff, Cushendall, Ballycastle and Bushmills can find out when it will be travelling along their nearest high street, through their town square or past their local village shop.

The Torchbearers confirmed to carry the Flame in Glenariff, Cushendall, Ballycastle and Bushmills this week include those that were successful through the public nomination processes run by LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.

LOCOG has endeavoured to slot all community Torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on. Each Torchbearer will wear a white and gold uniform which been designed by adidas.

Welcoming the news, Paudie McShane, Chairman of Moyle District Council, stated: “This is a once in a lifetime for the residents of the Moyle District to be part of a worldwide stage and to showcase our beautiful locations, our heritage and culture but most of all Moyle’s warm welcome. I am delighted to play a part and to represent the people of Moyle as Chairman of the District in this wonderful event.

“With the Street Level announcement today (Monday) I think it will help bring the Relay route to life and demonstrate the breadth and scale of the Flame’s journey as it makes its way through the North of Ireland and to the Olympic Stadium for the start of the 2012 Olympic Games.

“Moyle District Council encourage as many people as possible to get involved in the festivities within the four host towns and villages, Glenariff, Cushendall, Ballycastle and Bushmills by lining the streets and cheering on our inspirational Torch Bearers.

Lastly, the council extends a warm welcome to the Torch Bearers who will represent all that is good about our area. We fully intend to give them a Moyle welcome they will carry with them for their lifetime.”

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, added: “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets. Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Moyle District Council’s moment to shine.”

An average of 115 Torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000-mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in each Nation and Region of the UK to devise the route and is taking the Olympic Flame to within ten miles of over 95% of the population.

Schools across the UK can now access free learning resources linked to the Olympic Torch Relay through Get Set (london2012.com/getset), the official London 2012 education programme.

The activities are designed to help schools and colleges make the most of the Relay by lining the route, and cheering on their local Torchbearers. Resources include ideas for making Flame hats and shakers to welcome the Flame, an assembly presentation to get the school behind a Torchbearer and a film showing one Get Set network school’s preparations for the Relay.
