On their bikes for cancercharity

A GROUP of friends from Mid-Ulster have raised over £7000 for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children through a three day cycle in Donegal in July.

The nine-strong group, six of whom are employees of SDC Trailers, recently presented a cheque for 7275 to the charity.

The three day cycle, which was organised by the team themselves to avoid any overhead costs, saw them peddle over 210 miles

Jane Millar from Magherafelt, Colin Reid from Magherafelt, Linda Hughes and Brendan Hughes from Castledawson, David O’Neill and Martina O’Neill from Castledawson, Eugene McCrystal from Draperstown, Niall McPeake from Ballymaguigan and Jacqueline McShane and Ciaran McShane from Toome all took part in the cycle challenge.

Jane said the group was a mixture of those who had some experience of cycling, as well as those who hadn’t been on bikes since they were children.

“A few of us had completed the London to Paris cycle and the one to Poland, but there were others who were less experienced,” she said. “We decided to give it a go and we started training in October/November of last year with some local rides, out and about, then we did some spinning classes as well as the Cookstown to Portrush cycle in May,” she said.

“The first day was horrendous - we rode from Cookstown to Donegal town along with the support bus. It was really tough going. Donegal wasn’t exactly an exotic holiday but with no overheads, we thought it was best to organise it ourselves.”
