On your bikes, local firm urges employees

When your employer tells you to get on your bike, it generally isn’t a good thing.

But at Haldane Fisher, it means something entirely different.

The leading builders’ merchant has operated a Cycle to Work scheme across its Northern Ireland branches since November 2010, offering employees the opportunity to quite literally get on their bike.

“We are delighted to be able to support employees with an easy way to exercise every day while also reducing their travel to work costs,” said Andrew Laird, from Haldane Fisher.

“The initiative is extremely well supported and contributes to a fitter, healthier staff, which can only be a good thing.”

As part of the scheme, employees can lease bikes and equipment, up to a maximum of £1,000, from the company for a 12-month period and are also given an opportunity to purchase once the lease is up.

Employees can pay weekly or monthly and they can save up to 42 per cent on the cost of a bike and equipment,” added Andrew. “

By doing this through a salary sacrifice scheme, the amount is deducted from their gross salary, therefore earning them a saving on tax and NI contributions.

So it helps create a healthy bank balance as well.”

Gareth Hughes, works in the door processing plant at Haldane Fisher’s Newry headquarters.

He has just become the fiftieth employee to join the scheme and uses pedal power to get to work.

“I’ve been with the company for 11 years and I love the Cycle to Work scheme,” said Gareth. “

“I have a keen interest in downhill mountain biking and the scheme allows me to bring my passion for cycling to work as well.”
