One cut just doesn’t cut it

Cllr Cara McShane said: “Residents and other community representatives across the district have been contacting me voicing their anger and frustration at the state of many road sides.

“It is only a matter of time before there is an accident as drivers are often left to quite literally gamble with their lives, as they edge their way out onto busy roads which have been left with zero visibility splays.

“Not only is it creating a major road safety issue, we live in the midst of one of the top tourist routes in the world and the sight of unkempt road sides is not the most positive and attractive images to show off our area.

“There is no doubt that Roads Service, now Transport NI, do a great job of many verges and ensuring that our roads are in a good state.

“While budgetary cuts have been cited repeatedly as a reason for grass verges not being cut and instead left to grow wild and unkempt, an annual cut is simply not good enough. It is one of the most basic expectations that rate payers and tax payers have of government.

“I have been in contact with the department to follow up on specific requests made by residents and will continue to work to ensure that road safety is paramount in any allocation of funding and resources from local and central government.”
