One-hour Spitfire special

an edited one-hour version of the three-programme BBC NI series ‘DIG WW2’, which featured aviation historian Jonny McNee, from Claudy, will be shown on BBC 1 this coming Sunday, July 15, at 5 30pm.

Mr McNee, author of the book The Story of the Donegal Spitfire, played an integral part in finding the Spitfire which crashed into the Donegal hillside at Carrowtrasna, burying itself in the soft peatland where it remained for almost seven decades before McNee and a team of excavation experts recovered the stricken aircraft and set about restoration work.

So captivated have people been by the story of The Donegal Spitfire that a second printing of McNee’s books has been made, and it too is now almost sold out.
