One in eightclaims DLA

ONE in eight people in Londonderry claim disability allowance, it has been revealed.

There are more Disability Living Allowance (DLA) claimaints in Londonderry than anywhere outside West Belfast.

With one in eight people claiming DLA in Londonderry we account for 8 per cent of Northern Ireland’s 188,642 recipients - a total of 14,460.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland outlined the figures for February 2012 in response to an Assembly Question.

West Belfast is the Northern Ireland constituency with the highest number of DLA claimants at 17,014.

DLA claimants are entitled to either one or both of two separate components - care and mobility.

The lowest possible claim for an individual is for £20.55. The highest possible claim is £131.50.
