Cllr Padraig McShane (Independent) said action is needed to improve access to beaches for emergency vehicles.

Cllr Sharon McKillop (TUV) said the name of the beach at Portballintrae needs to be called the same thing by all emergency services and she said the Ordnance Survey name is Bushfoot Strand.

Cllr Robert McIlroy (DUP) said that although they have signs at some beaches saying ‘No bathing’ he said prominent reference also has to be made to the dangers of surfing as well.

He said the “awful tragedy” at Portballintrae “has really touched a lot of people in our community”.

SDLP councillor Donal Cunningham; Independent councillors Seamus Blaney and Randal McDonnell and Cllr Cara McShane (Sinn Fein) joined with all councillors to express their sympathy.
