Open evening at midwifery led unit

AROUND 150 people attended the Open Evening at the Lagan Valley Midwifery Led Unit recently.

The midwives had extended an open invitation to the community to come in and see the high standard of accommodation and services offered in the unit.

Those who took up the invitation included pregnant women, mums and babies who were born in LVH, school girls studying health and social care, health visitors, social workers, GPs, student midwives and the Mayor of Lisburn.

It was a friendly, welcoming evening, with supper served by the midwives. People moved around the birthing centre hearing about relaxation techniques for labour, reflexology and breastfeeding support for mothers.

Many other information stands were available also. The Red Cross resuscitation classes were a big hit with everyone. They had five mannequins for mums and dads to practice on and they held classes every half hour throughout the evening.

Everyone had a chance to look at the birthing rooms with ensuite pool room and a bed for dad too.

Midwife Winnie Chambers said. “If anyone has missed our open night you will still be very welcome to come any time to have a look around the birthing unit and have a chat with the midwives.

“We also offer a full range of ante and post natal services to mums who are having their babies in a consultant led unit, which means they can have all their care close to home. We were delighted to welcome people from West Belfast, Dunmurry, Banbridge and Dromore as well as from the Lisburn area.”
