Opening of city lakes

THE balancing lakes in the centre of Craigavon were officially declared open in July 1975.

Minister of State, Mr Don Concannon, officially handed over responsibility to the borough council.

He described the lakes as a “beautiful centrepiece of a really fine city.”

The council had plans for the lakes, top of which was the formation of a free-for-all sailing club.

Until it was set up the public could sail their crafts free of charge.

Meanwhile the council planned to organise several regattas to publicise the lakes.

They were also going to base a rescue craft on the lakes and two wardens, equipped with bicycles, would also be on hand for those in distress and to make sure the regulations were adhered to.
