The PSNI anticipates that it will make savings of around £250,000 per year and up to £75,000 by the end of this financial year as a result of the plans.

A spokeswoman for the organisation told the TIMES details of the new opening hours in Dungannon and Cookstown will be advertised in advance of implementation.

The PSNI spokeswoman continued: “We are looking at a whole range of measures to make sure we are spending money and using our resources effectively and efficiently.

This includes station enquiry opening hours based on demand and need. We are working to reduce the enquiry office hours in Dungannon and Cookstown stations - currently open 14 hours a day six days per week and 9.5 hours on a Sunday in Cookstown and eight hours on Sunday in Dungannon - to a maximum of 12 hours per day.”

The changes have not been welcomed by the Police Federation. Spokesman Terry Spence said: “This is a ludicrous situation. A reduction in hours must necessarily mean a reduction in service, and that is to be regretted.”
