400 voices in Drumceatt Square to remember 400 years of Limavady

STILL getting to grips with the busy schedule that comes with the Mayor’s chain, Councillor Gerry Mullan was only too happy to rearrange his day to launch the ‘400 voices in the Square’ event in Limavady this morning.

The former St Mary’s pupil joined 400 of the school’s students to sing the song to the tune of one of Limavady’s most famous exports - Danny Boy - at Drumceatt Square, outside the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre.

The project celebrated the 400th anniversary of the signing of Limavady’s town charter. “As a former St Mary’s pupil, it was my pleasure to rearrange my diary to be here today for this significant event,” said Mayor Mullan. “On March 31, 1613, Limavady signed a town charter, and today’s event celebrates our history. The weather may have turned a bit sour, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of everyone taking part. It is just as well there is no roof over Drumceatt Square… because it would have been lifted today,” he said.

The 400 voices project gave pupils at the school a perfect chance to celebrate a landmark year for Limavady, said St Mary’s principal Mary McCloskey.
