Beacons shine for VE Day anniversary

Two special beacons were lit in Antrim and Newtownabbey on Friday evening, May 8 to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey simultaneously lit beacons on the motte at Antrim Castle Gardens and on top of Carnmoney Hill as part of a UK-wide VE Day anniversary commemoration.

Mayor Thomas Hogg lit the beacon at Antrim Castle Gardens and Deputy Mayor John Blair lit the Carnmoney Hill beacon.

Among those who attended the ceremonies were service personnel, former servicemen and women, Royal British Legion representatives and young people from the Cadet Forces.
