Business case approval neededfor 400th Anniversary funding

CULTURE Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has said any “budget allocations” for the commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of the granting of Borough charters, will be subject to business case approval.

Limavady Borough Council is currently using the 400th Anniversary of the granting of a Town Charter by King James I in 1613 as an opportunity and a tool to market the Borough and bring visitors to the Limavady district.

Now, Carál Ní Chuilín has said that any budget allocations will be subject to the approval of a business case. She had been asked by Strangford MLA Michelle McIlveen “if any money has been allocated by her Department to assist in the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the granting of Borough Charters, in 2013?”

The Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure replied: “Budget allocations to Borough Charter projects are subject to business case approval. Currently my Department, through the Ministerial Advisory Group - Ulster Scots Academy (MAGUS), has allocated £42,500 to a Charter project by Coleraine Borough Council. The project will provide a legacy for Coleraine town centre to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the town’s charter.

“Any further budget allocations to Borough Charter projects will again be subject to business case approval. Libraries NI and PRONI are organising and contributing to a number of events relating to the 1613 Borough Charters next year. This activity will be funded from existing budget allocations.”
