Cancer Research group steps up for sponsored walk challenge

THE Cancer Research Larne Committee has been campaigning for funds for the charity with several events since the beginning of the year.

In Janaury, we held a Forever Living party in chairperson Pat Ritchie’s homoe which raised £134. We also held a fun pub quiz in Larne Lawn Tennis and Bowling Club which raised a further £300. Our thanks to the club committee and Michael Campbell, quizmaster.

In March we recieved a ery generous donation of £425 from Mrs Maureen Nelson of Kilwaughter. The money was received by Mrs Nelson in lieu of presents for her 90th birthday.

In April we held a Pamper Day at Greenland Community Centre which raise £359. The proceeds were furhter boosted by an anonymous donation of £150. Our thanks to Eddie Brownlow, caretaker of the centre, and also to Kelly and Liam for helping on the day.

Our committee also received £250 form our share of ticket sales of a car draw, run by Cancer Research UK, Ballymena committee.

In June, £225 was raised from a prize draw at the Party in the Park for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. Our thanks to Happy Days, Woodsides and Kyleigh Duddy for supplying prize donations.

Our annual street collection in July raised £406. Our thanks to friends of the committee, Danielle Gordon, Karla Ritchie and Lisa Crooks for helping with the collection.

Our next event will be our annual sponsored walk which will take place from Larne Leisure Centre on Saturday, September 15. The route will follow the Coast Road to the Black Arch (5km) or Carnfunnock (10km) and back. Sponsor forms can be obtained by contacting Pat Ritchie on 2827 3539. We hope to get as much support as possible for this event.

I will also be taking part in the BUPA Great North Run on Septemebr 16 to raise funds for CRUK. I will be running the 13.1 miles in memory of my friend Leanne who died recently from ovarian cancer at the young age of 29. anyone who would like to sponsor me can do so securely by donating online at www.justgiving.com/Elaine-McKay1970

We would like to thank the people of Larne for their continued support ove rthe year. CRUK relies solely on charitable donations and its work contniues to develop life-saving treatments for people with all types of cancer.
