A total of 10 AS Spanish pupils took part in an exchange programme with the same number of young people from SAFA San Luis School in El Puerto de Santa María, Cadiz, in the south-west of Spain.

SAFA San Luis is a school closely linked with the language department at Carrickfergus Grammar as pupils in previous years have had the opportunity to communicate via letters as pen pals in order to improve their language skills.

A statement from the school added: “However, this year the link was taken a little further by creating an exchange programme in order to benefit both the Carrickfergus pupils who take Spanish for A Level and the pupils from SAFA San Luis who study English, whilst at the same time making new friends and putting language skills into everyday usage.

“During the exchange the Spanish pupils were able to experience the school, our town and our country by visiting tourist sites such as Carrickfergus Castle, the Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge.

“A highlight of the exchange was an evening spent in school with everyone and their family bringing a homemade, traditional Northern Irish dish. Once everyone had eaten, the group sat back to watch some entertainment provided by our very own Carrickfergus Grammar School pupils, and even the principal.”

The second leg of the programme will be completed with a Carrickfergus Grammar visit to Spain in September.
