Civil service employs 1,000 locals

ALMOST 1,000 people are employed in the East Londonderry constituency by the Northern Ireland civil service, it has emerged.

There were 982 locals employed by the civil service at April 1, 2012, a large proportion of whom worked for the Department of Justice.

Uniformed prison staff have been included as part of the Northern Ireland Civil Service staff since April 2012. There are 445 East Londonderry residents employed by the Department of Justice.

A further 184 locals are employed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, with 82 employed by the Department of Education and Learning, 121 employed by the Department of the Environment, 42 in the Department of Regional Development, 107 employed by the Department of Social Development and one more person listed as ‘other.’

Other constituencies have much higher numbers of civil servants, particularly in Belfast. In the South Belfast constituency, there are 9,177 civil servants. In Foyle, there are 1,629 civil servants. At April 1, 2012 there were a total of 27,739 civil servants in Northern Ireland. The largest government department in Northern Ireland in terms of employees is the Department of Social Development, where 7,316 earn a living. The figures were requested by East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs.
