Council bringing in income through price increases

THE Chairman of Lisburn City Council’s Corporate Services Committee stated that the Council are all acutely aware of the financial difficulties faced by many residents as part of the ongoing global economic situation and it was against this backdrop that they had set the district rate well below the current level of inflation.

I have recently received a letter from the LeisurePlex advising me that my direct debit for Gymtech 2000 membership (age 60+) has been increased from £17.50 to £21.50 a massive increase of 23% well above the current level of inflation.

It is of concern that the Council whilst retaining the District Rate below inflation are in actual fact obtaining income by imposing above inflationary increases on the ratepayers using Council facilities and to state that they are determined to mitigate any unnecessary additional burden on residents is not correct.
