Council deliver health and wellbeing project

THE ACTIVE LIFESTYLES team at Roe Valley Leisure Centre launched the second of their New Year projects this week, a six week ‘biggest loser’ style challenge.

After the successful Resolution Bootcamp challenge, The New Year – New You programme started on Thursday evening, under the watch of Master Trainer and lecturer Brendan McDevitt and Limavady Active Lifestyles Officer Andy Chapman. Limavady Health Development Officer Eimear Teague sourced Neighbourhood Health Improvement Project (NHIP) funding for the project.

Food dairies and free gym memberships were handed out on Day One. Participants were weighed in and given a full measurement check, before being told what the course involved. “It really is a fantastic scheme and we hope it provides the catalyst for many of the participants to commit to healthier lifestyles,” said Brendan.

“We are expecting participants to make use of their free memberships, and are asking people to commit to at least two sessions a week. We will also facilitate exercise classes on the course nights. Clients will be given information sessions on nutrition, goal setting and motivation.”

A third ‘Active Lifestyles’ programme has also been set up for January, designed to educate people on the fundamentals of nutrition. The Weigh to Health scheme is a free six week weight management programme being offered at Roe Valley Leisure Centre.

It will be delivered by Claire Holmes, Cook It! Dietitian. “This project is aimed at people who are overweight (have a BMI of over 25) and will encourage participants to look more closely at their eating habits and food choices,” said Claire.

The Weigh To Health scheme begins with an introductory meeting this Thursday (January 24) at 5.45pm and is open to everyone. The New Year – New You project is part of the overall NHIP Action Plan for 2013.
