Councillor expenditure should be disclosed

BY now every household in the City should have received their ‘Lisburn City Council Annual Report’.

I trust ratepayers take the opportunity to read this comprehensive document, which as a former economist, I fully appreciate.

At a time of severe economic difficulty it is essential that our Public Representatives are put under scrutiny, to ensure we are receiving value for contributions to the rates.

A recent correspondent to the ‘Ulster Star’ rightfully made the point of the importance of the press, especially at a time when efforts are being made to curb press reports. Openness and accountability are the hallmarks of real democracy.

The City Council, like others throughout the Province, at long last will be facing up to the long standing plans to cull the number of Councils and Councillors, long overdue.

Perhaps our City Council in future Annual Reports should consider, in openness and accountability, providing details of what local Councillors earn. The amount received can vary widely, depending on their responsibilities and the Committees and Bodies they serve on. This is an excellent Report, apart from Councillors’ expenditure.
