Councillors should support charity

LAST week’s Star raised three very interesting questions on pages 1 (Council takes 20 seats at £150 a head at ball), 5 (Councillors helps Polish men living in tent) and 6 (High rates could drive me out of business).

Being unemployed for almost two years, I fully sympathise with the views and opinions expressed in relation to the articles.

Following the recent rate increases, I fully concur with the comments from Ruth Gamble (the owner of Papparazzi) and can completely understand Councillor Pat Catney’s concern that he feared the Polish men he encountered and was endeavouring to help may not be the only people living in Lisburn City in such deprived conditions.

In such situations as Ruth Gamble clearly outlined over the damage high rates are doing, how can it be justified to fork out £3,000 for two tables at a cost of £3000 at the Waterloo Ball by Lisburn City Council?

By all means support charities, but more people would agree that individual Councillors should cover their our costs.
