Cyclists raise £31,000 in Glens charity cycle

The ninth Fun Run of the Glens (FROG) charity cycle saw over 350 cyclists from across Northern Ireland raise over £31,000 for the Cancer Focus Northern Ireland and Simon Community NI charities.

Some participants chose to follow the challenging Giro d’Italia route through the Glens of Antrim.

Funds raised from the charity cycle will go to support two local charities, Simon Community NI and Cancer Focus Northern Ireland.

Speaking about the event Chris James, Fujitsu’s Director of Delivery for Public Sector & Northern Ireland said: “This has been a record year for the FROG event having doubled the entries and reached a record fundraising total of £31,336. Fujitsu is delighted to support such a fantastic cycling event which is now in its 9th year and indeed our own team had an excellent experience.

“The Giro d’Italia’s visit to Northern Ireland helped boost enthusiasm for the FROG charity cycle which included some of the same challenging routes. I would like to congratulate all of those who took part and thank everyone who has contributed so generously to the fundraising efforts for two worthy local charities.”

Suzi McIlwain, Cancer Focus Northern Ireland, said: “We are delighted to receive such an amazing donation from the hugely successful FROG 2014. Due to the generosity of all who took part and those who sponsored the cyclists, Cancer Focus is able to continue to support those affected by cancer, and their families in Northern Ireland. Thank you!”

Susan Smith, Simon Community Northern Ireland said: “Simon Community are thrilled to have been part of FROG 2014. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring people together to support those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The support from the FROG participants really helps us provide vital services to those most in need and enable them to move to a place they can call home.”

Paul McToal, event organiser said: “Once again, I am humbled by the generosity of all those who participated and helped on the day, it is truly inspiring to see so many cyclists caring for charity and enjoying the Glens. I look forward to our 10th year with vigour.”
