Diamond couple’s generous gesture

When big-hearted Ballyclare couple Johnston and Ethel Barrett celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary recently, Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice was very much at the heart of their celebrations.

The couple’s family organised a celebratory gathering in a local restaurant, and family and friends were invited to make a donation to Children’s Hospice in lieu of anniversary presents. An amazing £1,360 was raised for the Glengormley-based charity.

Sharon Gorman, NI Hospice Donor Officer said: “Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is a very unique and specialist service providing care to over 280 local children and their families each year in Northern Ireland. It was a pleasure to meet Johnston and Ethel. Their selfless donation will help us to continue to support these children and their families both in hospice and in their own homes over the coming months and to ensure they receive the best possible care.

“We are the only children’s hospice here in Northern Ireland and demand for our services continues to increase. As a local charity we rely upon the local community for donations and gifts in wills. Thanks to Johnston and Ethel’s kind-hearted request and the immense generosity of their family and friends we were delighted to receive this substantial donation.”
