Dismayed by negativity

IT is with great dismay that I read the letter which appeared in last week’s Ulster Star, which considered the forthcoming journey of the Olympic torch through Lisburn to be in no way a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for the people of Lisburn.

As a fellow committee member of Leisure Services, I fully support Councillor Beckett’s comments. I agree that the cost of the Olympic Games in coming to London is considerable, and undoubtedly most of the events will benefit London.

However, the attention which such an event is attracting is of benefit to everyone in the UK. From my work as a councillor, I see the heightened interest in sport this year from our community, which has been boosted by the Chinese gymnasts choosing to use Salto as their training base, the renewed enthusiasm for this year’s Lisburn Half Marathon, 10K Road Race and Fun Run, as well as the new ‘Football Factory’ 3G facility at Lagan Valley Leisureplex.

All of this, in addition to the increased opportunities for businesses in Lisburn, to bid for sport related tenders.

In such times as these, when there is so much negativity around about the state of the economy and unemployment, I think that we should all embrace the coming of the Olympics, not only to London, but to the United Kingdom as a whole.
