Diversion should be cleared for rush hour

ON Monday night drivers around Lisburn could have been forgiven for thinking we were back in the bad old days of bomb scares and road checks as traffic snarled up around Bachelors Walk and Railway Street.

The reason? Work was going on in Wallace Avenue which was closed from Railway Street to the Belfast Road. Result? Long queues right across town including Seymour Street where the diverted traffic was backed up into Castle Street.

Why was this allowed to happen? Shouldn’t the contractors carrying out this type of work be instructed to clear diversions and allow traffic to flow during the rush hour? Do people who make these decisions know Lisburn is fighting for its economic life and decisions like this create a negative impact. Could someone please explain through your paper why this happened and give some guarantee it won’t happen again.
