DUP are not the party to unite unionism

I WOULD like to respond to Jeffrey Donaldson who in this paper on March 25 made comments regarding both Keith Harbinson not standing and resignations from the Lagan Valley Branch of the TUV (I was one of those who resigned).

I have no comment to make regarding Keith as that is for him to comment. However I do take exception to Jeffrey second guessing reasons for me (and others) resigning from the party.

My resignation has nothing whatsoever to do with uniting behind the DUP as Jeffrey hinted.

There were a few reasons that I decided to resign from the TUV but I can categorically state that it had nothing to do with a change of opinion on the DUP.

To me the DUP are still a party which I could never again support. They certainly are not the party to unite unionism.

They are a party which has broken pledge after pledge and promise after promise. They misled me for years, along with thousands of others, and that deceit will not be forgotten.

The DUP may get backing in this election and be returned as the largest party but I will not be helping them do this in either support nor votes.

I think Sir Edward Carson said it best: “Of all the men who are the most loathsome, it is those who will sell their friends and comrades for the purpose of conciliating their enemies.”
