Far from overjoyed by rates increase

ALDERMAN Paul Porter seems to think Lisburn ratepayers should be very grateful because the rates are going up by ‘only’ four per cent.

We are told by Mr Porter councillors have had a lot of meetings to reach this historic decision. Well whoopee do!

Doesn’t he realise that rates are one of the things we have no control over? If oil or gas goes up we can turn down the heating. If petrol goes up we go out the in the car less often.

But we have no choice but to stump up our rates no matter what the service we get is like. So to have to find an extra four per cent is a real kick in the teeth.

Here in the real world neither I, nor anyone else I know, has had a pay rise anything like the level of inflation for several years. In fact most of us have experienced at least one or two years without any rise at all.

So for Lisburn Council to boast about making us pay more on our rates simply shows how out of touch they are.
