‘Fed up being punished’ says Plantation bump objector

IT is regrettable for the more objective amongst us to believe that speed bumps may appear on the Plantation Road. Speeding does not cause the accidents, careless driving causes accidents. Humps cannot prevent careless driving.

No sane person would ever condone behaviour that could lead to road injuries, but it has been my experience that certain types of drivers do not necessarily slow for humps but of course we are all punished by them in terms of increased pollution, noise, decreased values, premature failure of vehicle components etc. Who pays? Silly question - I do, you do. taxpayers who else? And most of us don’t want them.

It has been suggested that the police, who are the only authority empowered to take action against motorists who violate the law, are over stretched with no resources to deploy against careless and speeding drivers, I say wrong. Have they ever been asked to help?

There are many courses of action which could be taken and I have read of some excellent suggestions in the readers’ letters section of the Ulster Star.

I am certain that the objectives of everybody could be realised through a process of education, information and where necessary policing. If there is a realisation that a problem still exists at that point some form of traffic calming can be investigated.
