Fresher’s day at NWRC

The new students at North West Regional College started the 2012-2013 academic year in style with a fun and informative Freshers Day at the College’s Limavady campus.

Over 40 exhibitors attended the College to hand out useful and entertaining materials to help students prepare for the year ahead.

The focus of the annual Freshers Day is to help the students get organised for their studies in a fun way, as well as providing access to agencies and organisations who provide information on where to get help when academic or personal stresses occur. The PSNI were on hand to advise students how to keep their belongings safe, and for their own personal safety, and local charities Marie Curie Cancer Care and Children in Crossfire provided students with opportunities to get involved in volunteering in the coming year.

Local leisure centres and gyms provided trial and discount options for getting fit, while Zest, the Divert Project, the Samaritans and the Open Your Mind Campaign were just some of the organisations on hand to ensure the new students know where to turn should they need some help later in the year.

The College’s own Student Services Team, answered queries and assisted students in accessing the range of financial resources available to them, while local banks offered to help students to manage their budgets by offering exclusive student accounts. College’s own Catering students and Mount Charles Catering provided the welcome snacks and refreshments at the event.

The event also provided an opportunity for the students to explore the wide range of activities they can be involved in at College, outside of the classroom. The sports clubs and societies at the College were delighted with the numbers signing up to try out for the male and female Gaelic and Football teams.

A spokesperson for the College praised the students who took full advantage of the Freshers Days: “I am delighted to see so many of our students engaging with the local agencies and organisations here. It is wonderful to discover that some have signed up to volunteer for local charities, as well the range of college clubs and societies, and have taken on board the advice on offer today. We are very grateful to all the exhibitors for arranging special offers for our students, and for taking the time to be with us today”.
