‘Get Active’scheme takenup by nurseries

Nursery age children in Carrickfergus have been taking part in an initiative to underline the importance of active lifestyles.

Jollytots Playgroup, Oakfield Nursery Unit, Silverstream Nursery and St Nicholas Nursery attended Belfast’s W5 science and discovery centre for the STEM Early Years event supported by the Department of Culture, Arts and
Leisure.

It outlined plans for the redevelopment of the home of Ulster Rugby at Ravenhill, the Irish Football Association’s grounds at Windsor Park and the new GAA stadium to be built at Casement
Park.

The action-packed programme brought over 100 pupils to W5 to raise awareness of health and well-being at a very early stage in children’s lives using the theme ‘Get Active’.

As well as a literacy-based workshop using Eric Carle’s story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, pupils had the opportunity to take part in a fun dance and movement session with Denise McVeigh, physical activity leader from Carrickergus Borough Council.
