Help charity with your own money -not ours

THE councillors who sat silently when they had a chance to stand up for the ratepayers by voting against going to the Waterloo Ball at £150 a head should hang their heads in shame.

then to compound the situation, Alderman Leathem tells us the council “supports some very worthy charities”!

No Mr Leathem, the council doesn’t support any charities - we, the ratepayers, do. You spend it, but it’s our money and we’re not even asked how we would like to see it used.

If the average rates bill in Lisburn is £500 (and I realise the council share of this is a good deal less) instead of going to this dinner, the council could give six deserving ratepayers a free year.

Alternatively, if the council feels it can justify spending this amount of money on 20 tickets, why don’t the councillors step aside and give the 20 tickets to those who are working quietly and without thanks every day to make people’s lives better.

Just a suggestion.
