Speaking to the press for the first time in his new role as Deputy Mayor, Mr McCorkell said that he will continue the hard work of his predecessor and party colleague, Alan Robinson.

He said: “It is both an honour and a privilege to have been nominated by my Party to serve in the position of Deputy Mayor of Limavady Borough for the year to come. My fellow DUP Councillor for Limavady town, Alan Robinson has served in the position for the past year and now passes it onto me. I want to pay tribute to Councillor Robinson for the excellent and flawless job he did while Deputy Mayor. Alan has done so much for so many during his year in office. He has set a fine example for me to follow and with God’s help I will attempt to follow his lead.

“Limavady Borough has not had its trouble to seek recently, with attempts to close HMP Magilligan and Thackery Place Residential Care Home. Yet the people and politicians of the Borough came together on both these issues and spoke with one voice in opposition to them. We made it clear that Limavady is not up for closure and still very much open for business – and we were successful. This should be the key for us and for the future of Limavady Borough.

“The DUP Deputy Mayor and the DUP as a Party where not found to be wanting on these issues, just as we have not been found to be wanting when it came to standing up for the loyal Unionist people when required. I can give the commitment that this will continue in the year ahead when I am Deputy Mayor.

“My congratulations go to the new Mayor of Limavady, Councillor Gerry Mullan. I wish Gerry all the best for his year in office and assure him of my help and support as he represents this wonderful part of Northern Ireland.”
