Limavady students enjoy A-Level success

Despite an overall decline in A Level performance from pupils across Northern Ireland, Limavady students’ success has been praised this week.

Pupils at Limavady Grammar School achieved an overall pass rate in their A Levels of 98.8 per cent, while St Mary’s students also achieved a significant increase in grades from A* to C. At Limavady High School there was more good news as this years results, on a par with last year, showed an increase in performance over the past four years of at least 10 per cent.

Students at the North West Regional College in Limavady also received their diploma results, with many achieving Distinctions in their courses - the equivalent of an A Grade at A Level.

“Allocation of university places invariably takes a little time to finalise, but even at this early stage the majority of our A-Level students are successfully placed or awaiting confirmation. It is delightful to see pupils who came to the school as hopeful young children set off to begin courses in subjects ranging from Accountancy to Zoology in both of the local universities and right throughout the UK.”

He also praised the performance of students studying through the Roe Valley Learning Community: “Collaboration between the post-primary schools and NWRC in the Roe Valley continues to provide an excellent service for A-Level students in the borough by ensuring breadth of choice alongside high quality teaching. Once again the strength of Limavady Grammar School’s A-Level results will reassure parents that, with hard work and commitment, our pupils can achieve their goals and move on with confidence to the next stage of their adult lives, be that in employment or Higher Education.”

Ms McCloskey, St Mary’s High School, Limavady:

“I was not only delighted about the results achieved by the pupils but their results ensured that they would progress on to higher education and follow the courses of their choice. This year we have pupils accepting courses in Queens, University of Ulster, Maynooth, Newcastle and many others to study Chemical Engineering, Finance, Mathematics, Teaching, Performing Arts to name but a few. While recent media attention has focused on the idea that exams are getting easier our students have, as always, worked extremely hard over the past two years to achieve these grades and their results are a testament to the commitment and dedication shown throughout their academic studies at St. Mary’s. The results continue to show the importance of the Roe Valley Learning Community in providing a wide range of course for all the pupils within the Roe Valley. As a school we are delighted at the schools overall performance but more importantly we are elated at the individual achievements of our pupils who we wish every success on their continued path of education and onto their chosen careers.”

Mr Lavery, Limavady High School:

“The excellent results achieved at Limavady High School are a testament to the hard work and dedication of staff but most of all the pupils many of whom have overcome considerable pressure and hardship over the years. In our school we don’t dwell on anything connected with failure but strive to connect with our pupils and put in place for them a subject menu which will suit their career aspirations. We are an all ability non selective school where pupils are encouraged to achieve of their best at their own respective level. This is a good day for our young people and their parents/guardians. Most of our students have achieved results which will take them on to the third level educational establishment of choice whether that be University, CAFRE or apprenticeships which are becoming increasingly more popular.”
