McClarty supports retention of Magilligan

David McClarty MLA joined Prison Officers Association’s Finlay Spratt on Friday to campaign against the closure of Magilligan Prison. Chairperson of the POA, Spratt, aims to secure 20 000 signatures before taking the campaign to Stormont.

David McClarty said: “I fully back Mr Spratt’s campaign against the closure of Magilligan Prison. There will be severe consequences for the area if the Justice Minister’s plans go ahead. Mr Ford’s proposal throws yet another blow at our already frail economy in the North West.

“Closure will mean that eventually the disposable income of over 400 staff will be lost to Greater Belfast as well as contracts serviced by local businesses. In addition closing the prison will uproot the lives of many staff who currently work there and their families.
