‘More leaders’ tops the shopping list for Scouts

A drive to increase the number of scout leaders in East Antrim has seen the organisation team up with a major retailer.

Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus co-hosted a ‘Scouting in South East Antrim’ event with the district, which covers Larne through to Whitehouse and inland to Ballyclare and Kilbride village, and at present has 14 groups.

The number of young people wanting to join Scouts is growing to such an extent that many groups have to operate a waiting list.

More adults volunteering as helpers and leaders would enable many more young people to benefit from the social training and education of the movement.

One extra leader per group would allow eight more young people to benefit. If this extended to one leader in each of 14 groups that allows for 112 more young people to get involved.

David Sterrett, Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus deputy store manager, said: “It’s our pleasure to have South East Antrim Scouting come into our store to promote such a worthy cause in our community.

“Our colleagues in store also got the opportunity to see the great ongoing work by the Scouts and learned about the valuable life skills and positive difference they instil in their volunteers.”
