NIPS speak on prisoner’s work experience

COUNCILLORS in Limavady heard from Northern Ireland Prison Service representatives on the opportunities and challenges involved with finding work experience in the local area for prisoners at HMP Magilligan.

Following the first meeting of a newly set up ‘Magilligan Prison Liaison Group’ Prison Service representatives were invited to address Limavady Borough Council “to give an update on the strategy for the Prison Service in Magilligan going forward.”

Limavady Borough Council’s Chief Executive Liam Flanigan updated councillors on the progress of the new Magilligan Prison Liaison Group, which has representatives from Limavady, Ballymoney, Coleraine and Derry City councils.

Malcolm McClenaghan and Jonathan McNaught from the Northern Ireland Prison Service gave a presentation in Limavady on “opportunities and challenges involved in the provision of work experience for prisoners in the region.”

It was announced last month that Magilligan prison is to be retained and redeveloped as part of a £200 million-plus plan to improve Northern Ireland’s prisons estate. David Ford ended uncertainty hanging over the future of the north west site by announcing that it will not only remain open but its capacity is also set to increase.
