Police hear views of local young people

PSNI Area Commander Sam Donaldson heard the views of local young people as Limavady Policing and Community Safety Partnership hosted the first meeting of its Policing Committee at Limavady High School.

Commenting on the meeting, school Principal Shane Laverty said: “We are delighted to facilitate this important opportunity for pupils to meet with local police officers to engage on issues of importance to young people living in the Borough. Our school prides itself on maintaining strong links with the support agencies in the community and we are very grateful to the Council for the opportunity to participate in this initiative.”

The Partnership (PCSP) - which was established in April 2012 - brings together the work of the former Community Safety Partnership (CSP) and District Policing Partnership (DPP).

It is facilitated by Limavady Borough Council and overseen at a regional level by Department of Justice and Northern Ireland Policing Board.

All Councils in Northern Ireland now have a role in facilitating PCSP’s, each of which has a Policing Committee.

Commenting on the role of the Policing Committee PCSP Chair, Councillor Brenda Chivers said: “We will work to ensure effective engagement with the Police and the local community to reflect the involvement, views and priorities of local people.”

PSNI Area Commander Sam Donaldson continued: “We want to improve community confidence in policing and engagement with local young people is key. Meetings such as this provide valuable opportunities to hear directly the issues that affect them most. This is the first of what I hope will be many meetings with local communities”.

Membership of the PCSP includes elected members of Limavady Borough Council and publicly appointed members of the community, as well as statutory organisations that have a role in reducing crime and tackling anti-social behaviour. The PCSP will be tasked with the formulation and delivery of a strategy that reflects and addresses the needs of local people.

The PCSP aims to deliver safer, shared and confident communities across the Limavady Borough Council area.
