Proposals needed to keep traffic moving

THE traffic lights upgrade at Wallace Avenue and the Belfast Road sounds, according to Alderman Jonathan Craig, like ‘an interesting idea’.

That’s the problem - it’s an interesting idea, but is it going to solve the bottlenecks which build up in the area at peak times?

Anyone who has tried to come into Lisburn in the morning or evening rush hour - or around the time the schools get out - knows the frustration of sitting in a a single lane of traffic from Hilden. You battle your way to the roundabout outside Wallace Park and sit as traffic from Belsize Road has priority.

Quite how putting ‘intelligent’ lights at Wallace Avenue is going to improve this is anyone’s guess.

A lot of the problems are caused by what appear to be fads. We have bus lanes (ludicrous in a place the size of Lisburn) and even more bizarrely cycle lanes which appear and then disappear.

I certainly wouldn’t like to take my life in my hands by using the cycle lanes and I would not allow my children to use them. How anyone could feel safe using them on a dark and icy winter morning is beyond me.

I wonder if the Roads Service, who paid for the introduction of these cycle lanes, could now provide us with an analysis of numbers of bicycles on this stretch of road compared to before and how much it cost?

Surely all the many agencies could get together and try to come up with some joined up proposals to keep Lisburn moving?
