Rates hardship under UUP

AS a long term resident in Lisburn I find it incongruous to read comments from Mr McNickle who now seems to be an expert on the setting of rates in our city.

Firstly, is this the same Mr McNickle who received a huge amount of votes (164) as a member of the UUP at the last Council elections and is he really suggesting that somehow they were the business and rate-payers’ friend? As a businessman and rate-payer I have vivid memories of the hardship and pain that businesses in Lisburn suffered under the stewardship of the UUP, in particular the 9% rate rises under the chairmanship of Cllr Crawford.

As a businessman I know all too well the pressures the recession has brought to the business community in Lisburn and it is for this reason that I am shocked that Mr McNickle has not highlighted that this is the seventh successive year that Lisburn City Council has delivered below inflation rate-rise, once again leaving Lisburn as the third lowest rates out of 26 councils and the lowest rates of any city.
