Redevelopment of disused Rathfern site a step closer

The council is to appoint a consultant to draw up plans for the redevelopment of an area of land at Knockenagh Avenue in Rathfern.

The site, which is being transferred into council ownership from the NEELB and Housing Executive, has been lying vacant for years.

Following discussion with local community representatives, the council is now pushing ahead with the redevelopment project.

Initial concept ideas for the site have included the provision of allotments, an events space, a trim trail and a memorial garden.

On Monday night, members of the council’s Community Planning Committee agreed that a suitably qualified consultant be appointed to develop the initial concept ideas and provide costs for the scheme.

The proposal was made by Cllr Paul Hamill, seconded by Cllr Nigel Kells and agreed.

It’s understood the council has put a cap of £5,000 on the consultant’s fee.
