Schools praised for charity fundraising effort

Two Newtownabbey schools have been thanked for their support of the Action MS charity.

Kilbride Central Primary School raised the sum of £2,649.13 and Ballyclare Secondary, £6,749.10 for the Ulster based multiple sclerosis charity through “Walk for MS” fundraisers.

The schools were among 56 which have supported the charity’s “Walk for MS” involving 11,000 schoolchildren in support of families living with MS in Northern Ireland.

It is estimated that during the 34 years of the ‘Walk for MS’ campaign, over one million miles have been covered by people taking steps to beat multiple sclerosis.

Speaking at the annual Action MS ‘Thank You’ awards lunch, which took place in the Ramada Hotel in Belfast, Action MS chief executive Ann Walker said: “We continue to stand in awe of the amazing efforts of the thousands of schoolchildren from right across Northern Ireland who have raised funds on behalf of Action MS.

“In these difficult economic times, this kind of community support gives us all hope. It is a great encouragement that so many young people, their families and teachers made the effort and are prepared to seek out sponsors for a very worthy cause.

“Action MS continues to move forward in developing new ways of caring and working with the MS community. Our support services for families and young people are well-established and it is significant that young people are playing an important role in helping us to harness new technologies in helping to improve communications and information sharing within the MS community.”
